As a society, we spend so much time, care, and consideration thinking about how we want our loved ones to enter the world but never any thought on how we want ourselves or our loved ones to leave it. Just like creating a birth plan, I can help you plan your ideal death. Where do you want to be, who do you want near you, what comfort measures do you want taken? The answers to these questions, and so many more, can help shape your last moments on this earth. Together, we will create a formal plan outlining your end-of-life wishes.
Advance Care Planning is a very important step in making sure your wishes for your end of life care are honored. I can help you create a living will and designate a durable power of attorney for health care, a.k.a. A healthcare or medical proxy (for when you aren't able to voice your own wishes anymore).
If you do not have an advance directive and you are unable to make decisions on your own, the state laws where you live will determine who may make medical decisions on your behalf. This is typically your spouse, your parents if they are available, or your children if they are adults. If you are unmarried and have not named your partner as your proxy, it’s possible they could be excluded from decision-making. If you have no family members, some states allow a close friend who is familiar with your values to help. Or they may assign a physician to represent your best interests.
Vigils include sitting at the dying person’s bedside during the last days, hours, or minutes before their death. I am able to set this up to accommodate the client and/or the family’s wishes. Vigils are a sacred time and provide loved ones a special time to say goodbye, share any parting words or thoughts, or simply sit quietly with your loved one for what might be the last time.
Legacy projects are a beautiful way to document your life. In creating a legacy project, you decide what you want to leave for your loved ones and you are the creator of that legacy. Legacy projects can include: letters to loved ones, scrapbooks, videos, writing a book, and so much more!
I will help you plan, create, and finalize your legacy project so it can be shared with your loved ones when you are ready.
I am available to help with practical needs that may arise for you or your family during your end of life care. This can include but is not limited to: sitting bedside so caregivers can rest, shower, recharge, etc., light housekeeping such as cleaning or laundry, and preparing meals.
Maybe you just want someone to sit and talk with you. I am available to do that. We can talk about your situation, impending death, family dynamics, or we can talk about the weather. Or anything in-between. Sometimes, it’s just nice to talk to someone who is not personally involved in your situation. I am happy to be that person and to keep you company when you need it!
